Life Events at St. John's

Baptisms
Those baptized with water in the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit make a public statement of their intention to follow the way of Christ. Baptism creates an unbreakable bond between the individual and the Christian community. It can be done at any age and is only done once. In the case of infant baptism, parents and godparents promise on behalf of children to bring them up in the Christian faith. The Episcopal Church recognizes baptisms from all other Christian denominations.
If you are thinking about making a commitment to the Christian life, or you want to make such a commitment on behalf of your children, please contact us at St. John’s. Our priest can answer your questions and prepare you for this important milestone. Since baptism is seen as only the beginning of your faith journey, it is not necessary that you understand every detail of Christian belief. You will learn its ways of love and peace as you travel. Baptisms are normally not private but community celebrations that take place during the regular Sunday service in the presence of the entire congregation.

Weddings
A wedding is a joyful occasion, and within the Church it is a solemn and sacred act undertaken in the presence of God. Weddings at St. John’s are held for those seeking a Christian setting and a spiritual base for their relationship. If you are planning a wedding and also looking for a church home, we welcome you to come and sample the life of this faith community. Our church office will be your first contact if you are considering a wedding at St. John’s.
Weddings celebrated at St. John’s conform to both State and Church law. Within the Episcopal Church, at least one member of the couple must be a baptized Christian. The Church also requires that couples meet several times with our priest to help prepare them for the life-changing promises that they will be making to God and to one another. Where one or both persons in the couple have been previously married and divorced, our priest will discuss with you any additional requirements that may apply.

Funerals and Memorials
As Christians, we know that death does not have the final word, and that in Christ we have the promise of resurrection and life everlasting. Death, however, can be difficult for those a loved one leaves behind. Be assured that St. John’s stands ready to help you as you mourn your loss. We can provide an appropriate worship experience whether or not your loved one was a member of the church. The Episcopal Book of Common Prayer forms the basis for services that both remind us of Jesus’ victory over death and offer an opportunity for family and friends to honor in God’s presence the life of one they hold dear. For assistance in planning a funeral, graveside or memorial service, please contact our church office.
