CLERGY, VESTRY AND STAFF

Our bishop, The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, Episcopal Bishop of San Diego

"I call on the people of our diocese to renew our discipleship as a COMMUNITY OF GOOD NEWS. The Good News in Christ is what feeds us;  it is what the world hungers for. It is the good news of:

Hope through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
Meaning through the gift of baptism in the name of Jesus
Purpose through service in the name of Jesus."

Bishop Mathes is the fourth bishop of the Diocese of San Diego, and he brings to the diocese an uncommon mix of pastoral ministry and administration.

His passion for church education and growth began well before seminary and transferred to parish life. In 1991 he became assistant minister at All Saints’ Church in Belmont, MA, and then in 1994 he became rector of The Episcopal Church of St. James-the-Less in Northfield, IL. During his seven years at St. James, attendance doubled, church school participation tripled, and the congregation founded a community outreach effort to provide pastoral care to the indigent elderly and disabled residents of a local healthcare center.

In 2001 he was named Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Chicago, where he directed the department of Deployment and Congregational Development. In 2004, he was called to be our bishop.

Bishop Mathes and his wife Terri, along with their two children, enjoy hiking, theater, and travel. He is an avid woodworker and amateur historian.

Our priest, The Rev. Canon Wayne Sanders, Priest-in-Charge

Born and raised on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, Fr. Sanders was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest by the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1966. His first parish assignment was on Chicago’s south side where he served until 1971 at St. Gabriel Church.

Fr. Sanders then entered the U.S. Navy where he served as a Chaplain to units of the Marines and Navy Air, and became an Episcopal priest upon his release from active duty in 1974. He married Kathy Bracken, his wife of thirty-two years, and they are the proud parents of two grown children, Joy and Sean, and three grandchildren.

Having served as a parish pastor, Navy chaplain and Headmaster of All Saints Episcopal School, Rev. Sanders became rector at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church ~ University City (San Diego) in 1978, and served there until his retirement in 2005.

His passion for Children’s Ministry and his commitment to Christian unity have borne fruit in the vibrant spirituality of the congregations he has led.

Fr. Sanders is also Canon for Ecumenical Relations and Inter Religious Affairs for the Diocese of San Diego and president of the Ecumenical Council of San Diego.
